I WAS TAUGHT LOVE
Call me crazy but where I come from I was taught love
The type that doesn’t go to bed without good nights
The one that always wants a hug
The one that starts morning without a fight.
The love that speaks the language
of personality and emotions.
I was taught spontaneous love
The type that boldly declares “us”
That allows you wake up to goofy face selfies.
The one you can call home
The love that becomes your biggest cheer leader
That walks with you to the salon
That gives people good reasons to stare.
That makes jokes every now and then.
Where I come from,
I was taught love
The one that comes with beautiful pet names
My baby this, my babe that.
Sugar, Baby Cakes, Choco Heart,
Little Dough, Love Mix, Candy Stick.
Le Boo, La Bae, Ife, Obim.
The one that knows and shares a pure heart.
The love that supports passion
and doesn’t wear a frown for long.
I know a wild type of love.
That allows errors but corrects wrongs.
That says “I am sorry”
That says “I think you hurt me”
That says “Can we fix this”?
I don’t want to lose you
I was taught the love that keeps no record of evil.
The one that delights in truth
Where I come from
I was taught a love of plenty cuddles and hugs,
Eat outs, gifts, prayers, love letters,
Sincerity and transparency.
Cheers, laughter, a belonging heart,
an ever willing spirit.
The type of love that reminds you
of Christ and the body.
The love worth having
Date nights, karaoke, jokes, family.
Memories, moment and growth
Inside joke, puns, tight hugs and home
Where I come from
I know not less.
And I give, just as I was taught to.
Without limit,
Never to be made less.
